About the Project

Nearly 3,000 people call the City Dump home, in that their homes are literally on and surrounded by millions of pounds of garbage.  Stray dogs, parasites, the smell of methane gas, no running water and no sewer system is the daily reality for these people.  Most families make their living at the dump, searching the garbage for food, recyclables and other discarded items they can sell.

Hope Renewed’s Response

Hope Renewed is focused on one specific community among several in the the City Dump. The core of our operation in this community is Hope Center I, constructed with the help of many of our mission teams over the course of 2011. Understanding the importance of education to the future of the people here, in 2012 Hope Renewed opened a school in the community center for the kids. We started with only 35 kids enrolled in this accredited program and the numbers continue to grow as the need in the community continues to grow. Our future plans and the possibilities for Hope Center I are endless. Adult education, church services, community programs and a carpentry workshop are just a few possibilities for the future.

Immediate Goals:

– Finalizing the accreditation of the school

– Expanding the school to add another age group

– Finishing the playground area

Long Term Goals:

– Establish a local transitional home for girls aging out of the Mazatenango home

– Add additional housing to increase capacity beyond 30

– Establish work and training programs to prepare older girls for future responsibilities outside of home
