Our Mission
Guatemala is one of the poorest nations in the world where it is estimated that nearly half of the 14 million people live on less than $2 per day and 15% on less than $1 per day. Guatemala’s social development indicators, such as infant mortality, chronic child malnutrition, and illiteracy, are among the worst in the hemisphere.
Hope Renewed International (HRI) began in 2010 with the determination to make a sustainable difference in the lives of the people of Guatemala. The guiding question around which the organization operates is, “How do we exemplify Jesus’ love for the poor, while creating opportunities for people in at-risk communities without creating dependency on an organization?” Therefore, the mission of the organization is to share the love of Christ by providing care, education, employment and mentoring in at-risk communities. Our goal is to serve, equip, and empower the people in the communities where we work so they can ultimately help themselves, thereby creating dependability instead of dependency.
Hope Renewed International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Serve. Equip. Empower.
Serve: Whether it’s orphans, prisoners or individuals in extreme poverty, we strive to serve by fulfilling basic needs such as food, water shelter, education, vocation and sustainable opportunities for the future.
Equip: We provide individuals with all the components needed to implement change within their own communities. Our approach starts with providing education and vocational skills training to people in need. We hire local people and buy local materials whenever possible, creating jobs and income to further benefit the community at large.
Empower: We are committed to seeing people manage their own lives to the greatest extent possible. We work hard to empower them to do what they can for themselves, utilizing local knowledge, with minimal dependence on outside support.
Community Involvement
Lasting change doesn’t happen unless the community takes the lead. We seek to listen and learn from members of the community to better understand what is the appropriate, practical, and functional approach to best help that community. Then , we provide the resources necessary to accomplish the task.
Christian Witness
Our faith in Jesus Christ is the reason we do what we do. Jesus tells us to think more highly of others than ourselves; he calls us to love those on society’s margins, and to see the image of God in the poorest of the poor. Our understanding of the gospel shapes our view of what community development truly is. In our good moments, we empower people, build up communities, and bring an end to cycles of disease and desperation. But we understand that this is not the best that we have to offer. Through Jesus Christ, every human being can be in a right relationship with God; Jesus has the power to transform, to redeem, and to make our lives into stories of hope and purpose. This is the best news that we have, and we are compelled by love to share it. We do not coerce or manipulate. We serve all who are thirsty, regardless of their beliefs. But we do our work praying and yearning for people to know Jesus and accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior. We recognize that apart from Christ, we are the same as them – lost and broken and in need of God’s grace. It is our desire to help each person understand their need for Christ while meeting their physical needs.
Recognizing God is Always at Work
It would be arrogant to think that God arrives with us when we enter a community. He has been at work there all along, whether the people realize it or not. It is our role to recognize His activity and be part of it. In many communities, living witnesses to God’s work are already present in the form of local churches. As we enter a new community, it is our greatest hope to empower the people of God that are already there.
We at Hope Renewed will be intentional to:
Honor God – In all that we do
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, ” ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the great and foremost commandment.” – Matthew 22:36-38
Develop People – Both spiritually and physically
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.” – 2 Timothy 2:2
Remind them of the gospel – Because Jesus said to GO
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
Pursue Excellence – Because God creates all things with excellence and therefore, we will do no less
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” – Colossians 3:17
Be Good Stewards – All things are gifts from God, on loan to us to help those in need
“As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” – 1 Peter 4:10
What We Believe
Founded in 2010, we are an international Christian organization, serving Guatemala’s poorest communities.
We extend assistance to all people, regardless of their religious beliefs, gender, race, or ethnic background.
For our staff in the United States, Christian faith is a prerequisite for employment, based upon United States federal guidelines provided in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Statement of Faith
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:18-19; Mark 12:29; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Hebrews 1:1-3; Acts 5:3-4)
We believe that Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, and is true God and true man. (Luke 1:26-38; John 1:14; 14:6-11; Hebrews 1:1-8)
We believe that man was created in the image of God; that he sinned, and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death which is separation from God; and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature and, in the case of those who reach moral responsibility, become sinners in thought, word and deed. (Romans 3:10-26; 1 Thessalonians 1:7-9; Jeremiah 17:9)
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice; and that all who believe in Him are justified on the grounds of His shed blood. (1 Corinthians 15:1-10; 1 John 1:7; 2:1-2; 1 Peter 3:18; Romans 3:24-25)
We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into Heaven, and His present life there for us as High Priest and Advocate. (1 Corinthians 15:1-10; Hebrews 10:12-22; 1 John 2:1-2)
We believe in that blessed hope, the personal, premillennial and imminent return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 9:28; Revelation 1:5-8; Acts 1:8-12; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
We believe that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit, thereby receiving eternal life and thus becoming children of God. (John 1:12; 3:3-16; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; John 10:27-29)
We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and unjust, the everlasting blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting, conscious punishment of the lost. (Matthew 25:46; Daniel 12:2-3; Revelation 20:4-6, 10-15)
We believe in the spreading of the Gospel as Jesus said … “Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15; Luke 24:46-48; Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:20)
