Hope Renewed’s girl’s home in Mazatenango is a life-changing experience for anyone who walks through the gates of this beautiful place. Taking over the home two and a half years ago has been one of the most significant achievements for Hope Renewed since starting the organization. What an incredible honor it is to carry the responsibility to serve, equip and empower these young ladies so that they will someday become women of integrity, women with courage, and women with confidence who know what it feels like to be loved. We don’t take this responsibility lightly.
As we approach the two and a half year mark, it’s important to look back over some of the changes that have occurred in that time. Our initial focus at the home when we took over was to expand staffing and support, improve the environment and strengthen the learning and educational opportunities for the girls. In fact, we made significant changes to the staffing of the home right away. We brought in a new Director, hired a full-time psychologist, a social worker as well as a full-time teacher. In addition, we made structural and environmental improvements, including improvements to the electrical system and overhauling the water system, which now provides constant fresh water for the home, including filtered drinking water.
Today we have 26 girls at the home ages three to eighteen. In addition to strengthening the care we provide, we have focused on building a strong mental health program to support the girl’s needs. As mentioned, we’ve hired a full-time psychologist and are consulting virtually with a renowned child psychologist from Washington University in the United States. Based on the success of our clinical program and the care we provide, judges from other states are now placing girls in the home Mazatenango. Hope Renewed is setting the standard for other homes to meet!
Of the twenty-six girls, twenty-three are attending school, including one girl who was valedictorian of her class. The remaining three girls are educated by our full-time teacher on site. In addition to supporting the basic education of the girls, we are now offering various vocational training programs, preparing the girls for their future outside of the home.
Whether they are with us for one day or the rest of their childhood, we want these girls to walk out of the gates of this home having been positively impacted, with a better self-image, and a higher self-esteem. Most importantly, we want the girls to experience the love of Jesus and of people who value them as daughters of God. We cannot do this without the support of individuals like you.
